How Marketing Varies Across Industries

When most people think about marketing, they think about advertisement for a popular brand whether that be on social media or a commercial. However, the wonderful thing about the marketing world is how versatile it is! Really, the possibilities are endless.

While people in the marketing world may have the same ideals and goals, they also have different interests that set them aside from one another. To illustrate, those with a more creative mindset may want to pursue a career in the fashion industry. Yet those with a more strategic mindset may want to pursue a career in the financial industry. Still, both strategy and creative outlooks are important skills to have in marketing. Some industries may just use one more than another!

Thinking More Creatively…

Let’s look at the variation of markets in different industries more deeply! As stated before, creative markets may require you to have a more creative mindset. A great example of this would be the fashion industry. The fashion industry, much like marketing itself, is very versatile. When you think about it, everyone has a different sense of style – some people may prefer more athletic wear like Nike and others may prefer more summer-esc styles like Pacsun. These brands, while different and have different marketing strategies, all have one goal in common – boosting sales, making a good profit, and altering consumer viewpoints. When marketing in the fashion industry, this goal is something to keep in mind as well as the brand you are working for. For example, if you are marketing for Nike, your target audience is athletes or people who like working out which your marketing must accommodate to. The best part of this is your creativity! This includes social media posts of models wearing the clothing while playing sports or partnering up with an athlete to promote the brand. Of course, this is only one brand in a market filled with many. The same ideas include popular brands like PacSun or even more underground brands. The key ideas to take away are the end goal and the creativity of marketing in the fashion industry with many different types of brands and consumers!

Thinking more strategically…

Now, what about industries with a more strategic mindset? That’s where finance comes in! While this industry may be overlooked when you think about marketing, it is still an important one that would fall weak without the different functions of marketing. These functions include creating accurate and credible results, developing strategic communications to support their ambitions and move their business forward, and being communicative with their unique stories and differentiating them from others. All these functions help flaunt and create different financial products through TV commercials, newsletters, blogs, and more! These different products financial services may create are digital products like mobile apps. Mobile apps help financial services stay connected with consumers and their needs. Suppose that you are working with a bank that wants to make their mobile app more visually pleasing, so it is more accessible for the consumer. In this case, you would want to focus on the consumer needs and make the app more engaging which could include the fonts and colors you use to the way you layout different services that are easy to access. Also, advertising the app to the consumers in and out of the market. So, while creativity is still vital in any industry, strategic thinking is key in industries like finance.

Thinking about the bigger picture…

Marketing has a numerous amount of opportunities that are fit for anyone! For people who tend to be more creative, strategic, or a little bit of both, there is an industry suited for you and your skills. While we only touched on the fashion and finance industries, there are also industries like healthcare, tech, entertainment, food, and more, which share the same set of ideas. Nonetheless, it’s all about what skills you bring to the table and what industry your skills will succeed in the most!
