Black History Month: Entrepreneurs in Marketing

Black History month is a time to honor the contributions of Black leaders who have shaped industries and opened doors for future generations.  Among these powerful leaders are Black entrepreneurs who have turned ideas into successful businesses while breaking barriers along the way. From tech distributors to fashion experts, these successful business owners have not only built empires but have also inspired communities around the world. Today, we highlight some of the most influential black entrepreneurs who embody resilience and creativity. 

Rhianna – Fenty Beauty and Savage X Fenty  

Rihanna is more than a global music icon; she is a billionaire entrepreneur who has reshaped the beauty and fashion industries.  With Fenty Beauty, she prioritized diversity as she launched over 40 different foundation shades to ensure that people of all skin tones feel seen. Her lingerie brand, Savage X Fenty, has set new standards for body positivity and inclusivity in fashion. Rihanna’s marketing tactics demonstrate her ability to blend culture, authenticity, and social impact into her brands, making them exceptionally known. Her social media strategies, influencer collaborations, and viral marketing have allowed Fenty Beauty and Savage X Fenty to be billion-dollar brands.  

Daymond John – For Us by Us and Shark Tank

Daymond john turned a 40-dollar budget into a 6-billion-dollar streetwear empire. As the founder of FUBU (For Us, By Us), he revolutionized urban fashion, making it a global movement. Beyond fashion, he is most famously known for being a strategic investor on Shark Tank, helping aspiring entrepreneurs excel in their businesses. His marketing strategies showcase his branding expertise, like getting celebrities to wear FUBU in national commercials. He teaches branding and entrepreneurship through books and digital content. He is constantly working, teaching, and building on himself and his brands, making him a successful businessman.  

Pinky Cole – Slutty Vegan  

Pinky Cole made plant-based eating become a mainstream event with her popular restaurant chain, Slutty Vegan. She started out in a food truck in Atlanta and is now a multimillion-dollar brand with a cult of fans. Her unique branding, like provocative burger names, engaging social media campaigns, pop-up events, and limited-time drops has helped her business stand out in such a crowded industry. She ensures her brand is in the spotlight as she partners with celebrities. She also uses her success to give back, providing scholarships and grants to young and aspiring entrepreneurs.  

Tristan Walker – Bevel  

Tristan Walker realized that the personal grooming industry did not cater to black men, leading to his creation of Bevel. His brand was designed for Black men dealing with razor bumps and irritation. His company changed the market by prioritizing Black consumers, which many other brands had overlooked; this helped him have an authentic connection with customers and his brand. His storytelling form of marketing and community engagement has made Bevel stand out as a successful company. He sold the company to Procter and Gamble but still is a leader in the brands’ marketing strategies.
